Woody, smoky or ambery fragrance: three ways to choose

Parfum boisé, fumé ou ambré : trois repères pour choisir

The words “woody”, “smoky” and “ambery” often bring deep fragrances to mind. Yet they do not describe the same impression. These three simple pointers will help you read a fragrance pyramid, compare two scents and know what to look for when testing them.

1. Woody: look for structure

In a woody fragrance, the materials may evoke dry wood, resin, earth or a softer, creamier warmth. Oud can take on different characters: dark and dense in one composition, gentler or more balsamic in another. The name of a note alone cannot tell you how the fragrance will smell.

A useful approach: ask yourself whether you prefer dry, crisp wood, spicy wood or a rounder woody character. On a blotter, wait a few minutes before deciding: the opening is only the first stage.

2. Smoky: notice the contrast

A smoky impression may come from incense, certain woods or their combination with resins. It does not have to feel heavy. Rose, fruit or spice can add definition and make the fragrance more nuanced.

A useful approach: do not judge intensity alone. Notice what surrounds the smoky facet. A fruity note may soften it, a resin may extend its warmth, and a spice may emphasise its character.

3. Ambery: think of an accord, not a single material

In perfumery, “ambery” generally describes a warm, enveloping accord, not the amber used in jewellery. Depending on the composition, benzoin, vanilla, labdanum or other balsamic materials may contribute to this impression.

A useful approach: if you enjoy warm fragrances without seeking pronounced sweetness, pay attention to the resins, woods and spices. “Ambery” does not automatically mean “gourmand”.

A three-step way to test a fragrance

  1. Start on a blotter to compare fragrances without mixing them on your skin.
  2. Wait a few minutes, then smell the fragrance again to let the heart notes emerge.
  3. Try your favourite on your skin and observe how it develops before choosing.

A blotter helps with the first selection. Testing on skin still matters: it shows how the fragrance develops on you. Try not to test too many at once, either. Three fragrances are enough for a clear comparison.

Discover Sillage Nomade – Maison Solen

Sillage Nomade – Maison Solen combines oud and saffron in its top notes, rose and raspberry at its heart, then oud, benzoin and incense in its base. We find that Sillage Nomade brings Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton to mind with its woody, dark and smoky character.

This composition offers a way to use all three pointers: oud provides the woody structure, incense adds a smoky nuance, and benzoin contributes to the warmth of the base. Rose and raspberry create contrast at the heart.

Sillage Nomade is available online from Thursday, 15 October 2026, then at the Prilly boutique from Friday, 16 October 2026. Available sizes: 10 ml at CHF 15, 50 ml at CHF 49 and 100 ml at CHF 69.

What to remember

  • Woody: notice whether the wood feels dry, spicy, earthy or balsamic.
  • Smoky: look for the notes that balance incense or dark woods.
  • Ambery: think of a warm, resinous accord rather than a single material.

These pointers do not replace trying a fragrance. They help you ask the right questions before experiencing it on your skin.
